In what came as a bit of a surprise, WWE announced the release of three superstars on Sunday. Emma, Darren Young and Summer Rae were all released from their WWE contracts.
It hadn’t been the easiest of times for all three as of late. Emma was the only one actively doing something on major TV. She was chosen to be the opponent for Asuka’s WWE PPV debut at TLC last Sunday, and then fought Asuka in her Raw debut the following night.
She played a major role during the women’s revolution movement that we saw, and still see, taking place on both Raw and SmackDown Live. A couple of injuries kept Emma from being able to return and capitalize on the momentum that the women had built within WWE.
Summer Rae and Darren Young were missing from WWE television, with neither involved in a major storyline for months. The last thing we saw Darren Young doing was being coached up by Bob Backlund, in an attempt to ‘Make Darren Young Great Again’.
The releases come at an interesting time for WWE. They recently fired a former writer, Jimmy Jacobs, after he took a picture with the Bullet Club outside Raw a few weeks back. Neville walked out from the company, and his return to the WWE seems very unlikely. Then there’s Nia Jax, who was on a company approved leave of absence the last couple of weeks.
If these superstars can follow the path by those who came before them, there is hope for them to make it in this business outside of the WWE.
